Remote usability testing or online usability testing is a user testing method that is conducted remotely. This method is getting popular and relevant due to COVID-19 pandemic.
In contrary to lab-based usability testing, remote usability testing is conducted remotely. Participants are asked to perform tasks using their laptops or mobile phones in the comfort of their homes or anywhere quiet that they prefer. Also known as online user testing or remote user testing.
There are two types of remote usability testing – moderated vs unmoderated.
Remote moderated usability testing is facilitated by a moderator. The moderator will administer the tasks to the participants and engage in real-time communications with the participants. It is akin to a lab-based usability test that is conducted via video conference.
Remote unmoderated usability testing is usually quantitative in nature. Participants may go through the tests anytime they want as a moderator is not present. Tasks will be administered using user testing tools or software. Therefore, it is easier to achieve a large sample size compared to a moderated test.
Remote usability testing is a task-centric approach. The challenges include designing suitable tasks, determining post-study questionnaires, recruiting, screening and verifying participants.
For moderated tests, our UX researchers will schedule appointments with the participants to perform the tests. For unmoderated tests, reminders will be sent to shortlisted participants to take the tests within the deadline.
