Remote Usability Testing Q&A

What is Remote Usability Testing

In contrary to lab-based usability testing, remote usability testing is conducted remotely. Participants are required to perform some tasks using their laptops or mobile phones in the comfort of their homes or anywhere quiet that they prefer.

Remote Moderated Usability Testing

Remote moderated usability testing is facilitated by a moderator. The moderator will administer the tasks to the participants and engage in real-time communications with the participants. It is akin to a lab-based usability test that is conducted via video conference.

Remote Unmoderated Usability Testing

Remote unmoderated usability testing is usually quantitative in nature. Participants may go through the tests anytime they want as a moderator is not present. Tasks will be administered using user testing tools or software. Therefore, it is easier to achieve a large sample size compared to a moderated test.

Process of Remote Usability Testing

Research Design

Remote usability testing is a task-centric approach. The challenges include designing suitable tasks, determining post-study questionnaires, recruiting, screening and verifying participants.

For moderated tests, our UX researchers will set appointments with the participants to go through the tests. For unmoderated tests, reminders will be sent to shortlisted participants to take the tests within the deadline.
